Need Input: Scope Evaluation
Looking at all the internet accounts of different scope problems people are having, I wonder how many are the scope and how many are the mount/rifle/etc
These issues, when they are not an obvious significant failure (like a lens falling out or the turret detaching from the scope) are notoriously hard to diagnose.
It so happens that because of what I do for a living I have some facilities and equipment available to me that help facilitate these kinds of evaluations.
What I do not have a lot of is time. However, I am very curious to see where these subtle problems are.
Here is what I am thinking of doing and where I need some input from you.
If someone is having a scope issue and is willing to temporarily part with their scope, I will offer the following:
-send me the scope (preferably with the mount/rings)
-give me as much detail as possible on what you are seeing, under what circumstances, on what rifle, etc
Now, this will not be a quick turnaround. I will try to have a few scopes accumulated and once there is some critical mass, I will allocate a few days, make sure the equipment I need is available and try to narrow it down to where the problem is.
If I have a rifle similar to the one you have your scope on, I will do some shooting and try to replicate the problem.
I do not intend to take the scopes apart, so your factory warranty will not be impacted.
I will document whatever I find and share the findings with the scope's owner.
If I get a reasonable number of scopes to look at, I will publish the result summaries, obviously without mentioning names of who the scope owner is.
I may or may not do detailed performance testing. That remains to be seen. If I run a whole slew of MTF measurements, those will not be shared. There is information there that may expose some proprietary attributes of the designs.
There may be other performance characteristics at the heart of the problem and if I find something like that, it will be shared.
What do you think? Is it something that might be of interest?
