General Purpose AR, 2024 Edition
A couple of years ago, I wrote a post on a general purpose AR rifle: https://darklordofoptics.locals.com/post/2070087/choosing-a-general-purpose-ar-15
Yesterday, a friend of mine asked me about a recommendation for a good quality 18" barrel AR-15 upper, so I ended up looking around a little bit for what's out there.
He wanted something in the $600 to $800 price range and was set on an 18" barrel, so I ended up recommending this Aero upper https://alnk.to/a43nFy0
He already had a BCG, but otherwise, I'd tell him to get an adjustable one from Bootleg. I have had good luck with these: https://alnk.to/d3Cglum
Still, since he asked, I ended up doing a little bit of a search and stumbled on a rifle configuration that is very close to what I have ended up with after trying a significant number of different permutations over the last twenty-some years.
First of all, if you plan to travel with this thing, my general recommendation of building your own lower and then adding an upper from FoldAR still stands. That gets you a rifle that is under 18" when folded.

For the lower build, there is a million options.
I like grips from Reptilia https://alnk.to/2uGNuOH and DFCO https://diefree.com/kung-fu-grip/
With triggers, there is again a ridiculous number of options and most work just fine. I like different Geissele triggers and have several. That having been said, on more recent builds I used Triggertech https://alnk.to/2jM2w2Y with good success. I now played a little bit with Q's trigger and looked at how they designed it. I think I'll give it a shot on the next build. It has very nice feel and appears to be as drop safe as they claim. https://alnk.to/fwqS5fb
With stocks, it is back to Reptilia and their RECC-E https://alnk.to/9T8CH9f
I know we had a discussion in the past when someone managed to rip it off the stock with a little pressure. The one I have is quite secure and a few more I looked at since are also secure. I have reasonable confidence in them https://alnk.to/9T8CH9f
If travel compactness is not a priority, Q managed to build a configuration for under $2k that's pretty damn close to the configuration I ended up with. I will preface with the simple fact that I have not SHOT Q's version of this AR, but I have used damn near every piece of this when building my own.
In an attempt to expand their product line, Q has been fleshing out their Sugar Weasel product line: https://liveqordie.com/sugar-weasel/
They have been adding configurations, apparently, since there are a couple I was not aware of. I am thinking of going to New England for work in July, so I am going to try to visit them and lay eyes on it.
If you scroll down through the pictures of different Sugar Weasel configuration they have on there, one of the new ones is the 16" barrel Recce that has Reptilia RECC-E stock, Reptilia grip, Q's own trigger, light weight bipod and Q's 15" M-lok handguard. If not going with a FoldAR, all my recent builds had different Q handguards https://alnk.to/6mPt4VC
They have a very streamlined method of attaching the handguard to the receiver that has proven exceedingly secure.
The AR as configured should be in the 6.2lbs range without bipod. The bipod adds 8.6 ounces if you plan to keep it attached.
A brief search suggest that as configured they go for about $1900 which is, I think, better than I could if I bought all the components and built it myself.
