Sanctions on Chinese thermal riflescope makers
I mentioned this yesterday as it pertains to iRay. After some digging, a friend of mine found another announcement that also mentioned Guide. Those two make the majority of Chinese thermal scopes imported to the US.
They also provide imaging cores to many thermal camera and riflescope integrators out there, like Bering and others. I assume they are also impacted by this.
Here is the announcement where iRay is called out:

Here is the one where Guide is called out: https://home.treasury.gov/news/press-releases/jy2318
also took a snapshot of the relevant passage and attached them to this post.
iRay just released a statement that they are continuing:

To me, it looks like they are playing with fire, but then again, I am not a lawyer and I assume they talked to one. They state as much. They also state they have been in discussion with OFAC. If they managed to get a hold of someone at OFAC this fast, I am impressed. The gears of Federal government turn slowly.
Either way, I'll keep track of this and see how it all develops.
If these are indeed robust sanctions, I do not see how iRay and Guide products can continue being imported into the US. Perhaps, OFAC will issue some sort of a clarification regarding commercial activity.
In the meantime, I suspect that all the thermal riflescope manufacturers that do not depend on iRay or Guide are popping open champagne bottles that have been in long storage waiting for such an occasion.
This has every chance of shaking up the thermal riflescope industry in the US. The biggest beneficiary might by Lynred, but there are others I can think for whom this is a significant opportunity.
It is likely to give the somewhat troubled Pulsar a boost. Same for the US manufacturers like N-Vision (I am still a big fan of their NOX35 https://alnk.to/btniMcE)
Another really interesting question would be how thermal riflescopes assembled in Europe using cores from China will fare. I suspect many of these will switch to the European made Lynred cores. It looks like Leica's Calonox 2 did exactly that (premonition?) https://alnk.to/h6Fyael
If the sanctions hold, thermal prices will go up: same demand with less supply.
