Last year, Albuquerque was directly in the path of the solar eclipse. I was so busy that I was blissfully unaware of any of that. This time around, solar eclipse is going through Texas and it so happens that I will be in Texas on that day, together with my son.
Last year, I had to scavenge cheap solar glasses from someone, put them in front of the cell phone camera and try to take a few pictures. This time around, I plan to do better. Last year, by the time I thought of it, everything was out of stock.
Looking at the solar eclipse without protective gear will do permanent damage, so I am getting ready early this time around.
Given that the next solar eclipse in the US after 2024 is in 20 years, I am not itching to invest a ton of money into getting this going.
If you simply plan to sit and look at it, cheap paper glasses work fine. I am inclined to get a stack of those since I do not want to dump much money into this. They are cheap and work well enough. I do not know if they are all created equal, but the ones from Soluna are what I used last year and I did not get any retinal damage. https://amzn.to/4a3kvmS
If you plan to just snap a few pictures with your cellphone, these cheap filter work OK. https://amzn.to/4c71uSq I ordered a couple.
As it happens, I do not do a ton of telephoto photography, so the only telephoto lens I happen to have is a prehistoric manual 300mm F/4.5 Nikon lens that I occasionally adapt to an old Micro-4/3 camera I also happen to have.
I considered trying that, but instead I decided to pursue a phonescoping approach this year, since I have several decent spotters around.
The current plan is to use the Athlon Cronus 20-60x85 spotter I am testing https://bit.ly/3PeGb7r
I am exceedingly pleased with the image quality so far, so I will try to equip it with a solar filter and take some pictures of the eclipse. This is the one time, I suppose, when I do NOT want a reticle in a spotting scope.
I was considering getting my Leica camera set up with the spotter, but rather than screw around with adapters I do not have and risk dropping a six thousand dollar camera, I think I will try to digiscope it with a cellphone. I do have a couple of cellphone adapters I can use. I think all the ones I own are from Phone Skope. They are not great, but I can make them work. Universal eyepiece adapters have proven a little finicky, so I'll order a dedicated one for the Athlon.
As far as solar filters for large diameter optics go, there are many excellent and expensive options used for solar photography. I was looking for something on the inexpensive side, given the very limited use and stumbled onto this Celestron contraption that should work well wnough: https://adorama.rfvk.net/JzXNqE
Hopefully, the Cronus spotter is not too big. I am sure I'll find a way to improvise if it is slightly off.
The other alternative is something like this Daystar, but it looks even flimsier. Still, that's a problem easily solved by a rubber band.

Daystar does come with three different sizes, so it can be adapted to a variety of optics.
I'll let you know how it all goes.
