Question about March 4.5-28x52
Here is another question I received that I thought was worth spending a couple of paragraphs on:
1) What would suggest is the best type of rifle to put this on? or since it is a solid crossover, is it very versatile and can handle any application well?
2) Is it solid enough for the $1k difference from a ZCO either the 4-20 for a gas gun or the 5-27 for a 22 Rimfire for 22NRL/PRS to make it a solid bang for the buck versus the ZCO."
I think the 4.5-28x52 is at its best on compact precision rifles, NRL Hunter guns, etc. It squeezes a lot of performance into a rather small package, so it is really an excellent option when you are trying to save some space and weight while still having reasonably high magnification. It really has only one notable weakness: in order to get that superb flare control in a very short design, the exit pupil is somewhat constricted, so it is not at its best in low light. It is not bad in low light, but not ideal.
Now, I am not sure where you found the $1k difference. It looks to be about $350 for similarly equipped scopes at retail prices (spec table is attached).
Compared to ZCO, March is a little cheaper, about five ounces lighter, has wider FOV, focuses closer and offers more magnification.
ZCO has better edge distortion control (that's the compromise with FOV) and better depth of field.
Mechanically, I have not had any problems with either scope. ZCO has a touch more adjustment range. Turret feel is a little better on the ZCO, I think. I prefer the turrets on the 5-42x March to the ZCO, but the 4.5-28x has different turrets.
Optically, center field resolution on the March is quite exceptional and competitive with anything out there.
For a precision rimfire, I kinda like having a little more magnification, so I would lean toward the March over the 4-20x ZCO. With the 5-27x ZCO, it sorta comes down to cost and weight difference and how important they are to you.
For centerfire PRS, I think ZCO's depth of field would be an advantage for the way I shoot. Depth of field is one of the reasons I use Tangents so much. They are even better than ZCO in that regard.
Lastly, there is always a question of reticle and here it is something to pay attention to because that can easily make a difference between choosing between two excellent scope. ZCO reticles are not ideal for the way I shoot. March comes with a few reticles and two of them are my designs: FML-TR1 and FML-3. Naturally, I prefer the FML-TR1 since I designed it for the way I shoot.
I hope that answers your question.
