During the final SHOT recap last night, we talked a little bit about tripods and, in a way, some of the more interesting meeting I had were about tripods.
I plan to spend quite a lot of time with several of them this year, to see what works best for what applications.
Here are the three that really caught my eye:
1) Field Optics Research has their new Caldera32 domehead tripod. It seems to be a very clever solution and I liked the ergonomics. It is definitely on my list. https://www.fieldopticsresearch.com/
2) Athlon has jumped into the tripod world in a very big way. They introduced a very broad range of tripods right off the bat. They look to be the same essential design as the Leofoto and Vortex tripods, but Athlon is really offering a lot of value with the way they priced and packaged them. An interesting thing is that we know they work, since we know Leofoto and Vortex Radian work. However, Athlon will bundle them with a bunch of accessories and two heads. Given the value, for people getting into shooting off of the bipod, this will really be a good option for a lot less money than Field Optics Research or RRS.
3) Spartan Precision/Javelin Bipods. These guys seem to march to the beat of their own drum and do so in a clever way. These might be the ultimate hunting tripods and bipods and they lean decidedly toward something small and packable. The big thing is that they completely rethought the interface between the gun (or optic) and the support system, be it bipod or tripod. The couple of new tripods they had that really caught my attention are not available yet (they had some exceedingly clever new products on display), but I really want to spend some time with their products, especially since I might need them for some hunts I am conceiving this year. I plan to look at a couple of products they currently manufacture:
Ascent Tripod: https://javelinbipod.com/collections/tripods/products/ascent-tripod
and Pro Hunt Tac Long bipod https://javelinbipod.com/collections/bipods/products/javelin-pro-hunt-tac-bipod
The plan is to try to cover the gamut from lightweight tripods and bipods for mountain hunting to the ultra sturdy precision shooting tripods and perhaps a couple of other things in between.
