In a couple of weeks, I am going to head out to Texas to take three new hunters on a hog hunt.
Two of them (flying in from California) have never hunted before. One (coming from Alabama) has not gone hunting for three decades or so.
I remember when I lived in the middle of LA, going hunting was a daunting endeavor. I did not know anyone around me who had experience with that and I simply wasn't sure how to go about it.
Thankfully, I had friends out of state who were happy to help, but I really started getting into hunting after I moved to New Mexico.
Now that I've been at it for a few years, I make it a point to help those of my friends who are interested in this hobby and who happen to live behind enemy lines.
The place where we are going was recommended by a friend of mine. I have never been there before, but it is supposed to be fairly civilized. These guys are not looking for a backcountry hunt. They get to shoot unlimited hogs and to enjoy some nice bourbon and cigars back at the lodge.
Once they are situated, I am going to try to get an axis deer doe.
It is not that I am not interested in shooting hogs, but from a culinary standpoint I am more interested in axis deer. Besides, I took my son and my nephew hog hunting back in June and I still have plenty of meat from that.
At the moment, I am in the process of getting four rifles set up for everyone to use. Naturally, I have a few thermals coming for us to play with and create some content on.
Here is the line-up.
I am going to use my 8.6BLK Fix pistol, with an 8" barrel. Under normal circumstances, this gun mostly shoots subsonics, but the owner of the ranch suggested I need something peppier, so I set it up for Barnes new 200gr VOR-TX ammo:
The ammo is new to the market. Out of that 8" barrel, it moves at 1820fps with 9fps SD. This 200gr bullet expands at velocities as low as 1400fps, so this is a 200-250yards gun with suerpesonic ammo.
SInce I have to clealry identify that I am looking at an axis doe, not some other deer on the property, I needed a poor light capable riflescope on there, so I set up Element Theos on the FIx, but it is a backup scope this time around. I expect to get a couple of DNT optics to get here in time and the plan is to mount their TNC635R Thermnight for this. Thermnight has both a thermal optic and digital night vision device. I am very curious how well it will work during the pre-dawn/post-sunset hours when axis deer are active.
Next on the list is the Boombox I have, also in 8.6BLK with Q's Short Chop suppressor. That rifle is currently set up for Phantom Defense's ammo that launches 210gr Barnes bullet at 2270fps.
The main optic on the Boombox is Primary Arms PLxC 1.5-12x36. For the hunt I plan to N-Vision's new thermal clip-on. I'll post a picture when it gets here.
Next on the list is my trusty 458SOCOM AR-15 with YHM R45 suppressor that wears SAI 1-6x24 scope and shoots 300gr bullets at around 1850fps. For this one, I have Guide's new utlralight Orion 635CS thermal clip-on on the way. Again, once it is all here a picture is forthcoming.
Last on the list is the Stery Scout in 6.5CM currently sporting Leupold's Mark 5HD 2-10x30. My original plan was to pop Leica's Calonx 2 in front of it, but I also have another DNT thermal coming, so I am leaning toward putting the DNT on the Steyr and keeping the Leica as a spare in case something breaks down. One of the many ncie things about the Leica is that it is pre-collimated, i.e. there is no sighting in requried https://alnk.to/3ygwDEh That way, if someone's thermal goes down, I can just swap it for the Leica in the field.
Now, I just need to decide who gets which gun.

Tactical wizard next to a kilt wearing RO was, I thought, a nice scene.
