Home for a bit and thinking about the 40s
If all goes well, I will spend a whole 10 day stretch at home, which is sorely needed. Then off to New Jersey for a couple of days, then back home for another ten day stretch. That's kinda exciting.
One of the things I plan to make some progress with while I am home is the comparison of MPVO-ish riflescopes with 40-44mm objectives that I kicked off a month or so ago.
Since I first started talking about it, I added Steiner H6Xi 2-12x42 to the lineup and the updated spec table is attached. The numbers in it are from the published specs and I am not 100% certain Steiner FOV is accurate. I already found one typo in there, so I will measure the FOV. I think it is a little wider than the specs suggest.
Also, while pulling the information for the spec table together, I noticed that if you add the H6Xi 2-12x42 to the cart on Eurooptic, the price drops down to $1350. https://alnk.to/fwsNUQQ
I have not spent a ton of time with it yet, but so far I like the scope a good bit. The reticle does get thin on 2x, but the way they do illumination really helps. I think it is a very viable approach to an MPVO design although this method does lean toward primary use being above 6x.
Either way, if you are in a market for a 2-12x, $1350 for a nice US-made scope is a very good deal.
The way I am going to do this comparison will be a little different than what I used to do back when I started this whole thing.
I will release individual videos for each scope with a look at the reticle and some commentary on the features. Those will come out in no particular order, but if you care about the order, I am all ears.
Then, I will do a wrap-up video/article where I go into the details of how they stack up against each other, followed by a livestream a couple of days later to address questions.
Naturally, I am open to suggestions if you would rather see it in a different format.
These naturally form into two groups because of the magnification range difference.
Steiner, Blackhound, Leupold and Swampfox top out at 10x/12x, so they are right around what I would normally consider an MPVO.
Integrix, Delta, GPO and Tract lean a little more into the crossover world since they top out at 15x or more. 3.5-21x44 Delta is really a compact crossover design.
March with a crazy 1.5-15x really double dips between the two categories.
What I am trying to say here, is that there are a few different ways to look at these and as I go through the testing process, some of the nuances will solidify in my head.
