Look what I just found in the mailbox...
This scope first popped up on my radar at SHOT earlier this year. It looked interesting, but the reticle in it was some sort of an ultra thin skeletonized abomination that was completely in appropriate for a riflescope in this price range.
I politely pointed out that showing this scope with this reticle is not the most brilliant I idea I heard that week (those are not the actual words I used, but knowing which way my vocabulary leans, you can fill in the blanks).
Once they got over my exact phraseology on the subject, I suggested that they make the outer bars thick and prominent and moved on.
It appears that their solution to that was to take the skeletonized reticle and simply fill in the outer bars. Interestingly, the reticle picture they have on the website is still of the original skeletonized design: https://gpo-usa.com/shop/tactical/scopes-tactical/centuri-scopes-tactical/centuri-4-16x44-super-compact/
A couple of weeks ago, Doug from Cameraland called me up and said something along the lines of "that ultra short GPO scope is finally shipping. You should take a look". I glanced at the webpage, and, with all the politeness I could muster, explained to Doug that I will pas and why.
Doug thought about it for a minute and said that he was moderately certain that they listened to me and Brian (another mutual friend of ours, Brian, yelled at them for the same reason) and filled in the outer bars. Doug looked at an actual scope, confirmed that the reticle is indeed no longer invisible on low power and here we are.
The basic specs of this scope are quite appealing. It is a 20 ounce FFP scope of mid-range magnification, side focus, center-cross illumination, locking turrets and zero stop. On paper, that looks like a lot of scope for ~$600.
In practice, it also looks like a lot of scope for $600, but so far I only took a quick look.
For the more sharp eyed readers, yes, the published specs are a bit weird and some numbers are clearly wrong. FOV, for example, is clearly exaggerated by around 10% (I'll measure it exactly). Reticle is functional and much more usable than what they showed at SHOT, but it still needs a little work. Elevation adjsutment range is listed as much lower than windage adjustment range. That is a bit bass ackwards, so I will explore that in more detail.
Now that I am looking at it carefully, the reticle is what hunters think is a tactical reticle. Still, it is a step in the right direction and it is functional. Most of GPO's market has been hunters, so I am happy to see them aim a little more at the crossover market.
For $600 and 20 ounces, I am quite optimistic about what I see so far. Apparent FOV looks to be right in the 24 degree range, which makes me thing that the eyerelief is a touch shorter than the specs indicate. I'll spend a little more time with it and give you a more thorough run down.
