The question of ARDs came up a couple of times recently. Also, I noticed that the SAI6 1-6x24 that I have been messing with came with a thread on ARD.
As a reminder, ARD stands for Anti-Reflection Device. It is a honeycomb structure that is positioned in front of the objective. What it does is prevent light from getting into the scope from a wide angle and from reflecting into a wide angle. The original idea was to make a rifleman with an optic less likely to be detected by the reflection from the objective lens. A nice side effect, of sorts, was that a well designed ARD, while restricting the overall amount of light, often improves image fidelity by cutting out flare.
It was not something I thought of until a scope comparison several years ago when I forgot to remove the ARD from Tangent Theta 3-15x while doing a test. The image looked really good, but it was slightly less bright than it was supposed to be. Contrast and detail were spectacular, however. Well, it turned out that I accidentally forgot to remove the Aadland ARD from the scope https://aadmount.com/collections/ards
When I pulled off the ARD, image got brighter and performance when it is pitch black got better. However, during dusk and dawn, flare became a little more noticeable, although still very well controlled. It is a nice scope. The version I have came with the Gen2 XR reticle that, I think matches the scope well. Euro seems to be running at a slight discount at the moment. That's unusual for Tangents https://alnk.to/clXEqLB
I also have a Tenebraex ARD for it and it also works well: https://alnk.to/7fpFZ5K
Yesterday, I was messing with the scope covers from 100Concepts. They are new to me and the kit I ordered for the Delta Stryker 1-10x28 has an ARD.

The Delta is rapidly becoming one of my favourite alround scopes for an accurate AR, so it is a nice platform to test out the 100COncepts caps.
This style ARD is held by small bungee cords, so it is very easy to remove or slide back on.
The caps have to be the right size to work well and most sizes seem to be out of stock every time I look. However, they had the right size for the Delta.
I attached two through the scope pictures on 1x, one with ARD and one without.
Notice that on 1x, you see a little bit of the ARD honeycomb structure which you may or may not find distracting.
I am not hugely concerned about it, but YMMV.
The way ARDs work on conventional scopes, they rely being fully out of focus, so that there is no image disruption other than slightly less light.
With conventional scopes, that is the case. However, on 1x, the depth of field is so large that you actually see some of the ARD in the image. Once you get up to 2x, it is sufficiently defocused to completely disappear from view.
