I keep on meaning to do a thorough overview of the different LRFs out there. The subject comes up often enough. The truth is that I have not been able to assemble any sort of a significant number of them here for a comparison.
I currently have two dedicated LRFs here: Leica CRF 3500.com and Vortex Ranger 4000GB. I also have Meopta Optika LR 10x42 binocular with built in LRF.
I have not spent a whole lot of time on dedicated LRF tests, but I use the LRF all the time as I work on other things. I was at the range earlier today and realized something noteworthy: without intending to, I switched completely to the Geoballistics version of Vortex' Razor 4000 GB LRF. Now that I think about it, I am really not sure where the Leica and Meopta are. They have been collecting dust for a little while now. I should probably dig them up and post them for sale, especially since the weapon mounted Impact rangefinder should be here pretty soon, hopefully in time for my pronghorn hunt.
Impact will probably end up permanently mounted on one of my Fix rifles, while Razor 4000GB will continue residing in my range bag.
Now that I have had a chance to properly think about it, the biggest reason I have switched to the Razor so thoroughly is multifold:
1) it is quite good optically, so I do not feel shortchanged. I use the LRF as a monocula rquite a bit.
2) it can be paired with the Kestrel to take in wind information and display a complete, wind and drop, solution as you are looking through the LRF. With the Leica, the Kestrel gets distance data from the LRF and displays the solution. I have to range the target with the Leica, then look at the Kestrel for the ballistic solution. I think that is bass-ackwards. I want to see the ballistic solution as I am looking at the target, i.e. in the LRF.
3) the distance measurement functionality has proven to be quite reliable.
There are other interesting features, like geotagging your target and things like that, but the three above are what I use all the time.
I have two windmeters: WeatherFlow and Kestrel. Unfortunately, the WeatherFlow does not talk directly to the LRF. They both talk to the Geoballistics app on the phone and the app displays the solution. With the LRF talking directly to the Kestrel, I do not have to have the cell phone with the app open in front of me (I do have to use the app to do the initial pairing of the Razor 4000GB to the Kestrel). That is proving to be very valuable.
Aside from that, I have pitifully few picture of it, because I just grabbed it and started using it. I suppose that in itself is a compliment since the 4000GB ended up integrated into my normal use so quickly and seamlessly.
I'll take some pictures and put together a video.
This is the LRF I am talking about: https://bit.ly/3X2yWSP
Note that there is a less expensive older version that does not have the Geoballistics integration. I do not have any experience with it and given that us the connectivity all the time, I am not terribly interested in it.
