I will head out on a hog hunt toward the end of this coming week. It is the start of my kids' spring break, so they will head out with me. It is also going to be the first time I get to use my new toy hauler trailer which is very exciting.
A couple of friends of mine from Texas and Alaska are likely going to join me, so I am really looking forward to it.
The lease we are going to is as close to in the middle of nowhere as you can get in Texas and cell phone reception there is exceedingly spotty. There is a fair chance I will be offline for a few days.
My original plan was to compare several thermal clip-ons while I am there, but a couple of different products I wanted to look at are not going to make it in time. Those will have to be tested separately at a later point. One more might still make it here before I head out on Thursday, but this is what I have on hand so far:
Burris XTC50 clip-on: 50mm F/1.2 lens with 400x300 core, 17 um pixels
Steiner S35 riflescope: 35mm F/1.0 lens with 640x480 core, 12 um pixels
Steiner C35 clip-on: 35mm F/1.0 lens with 640x480 core, 12 um pixels
Accufire Incendis clip-on: 35mm F/1.2 lens with 384x288 core, 17um pixels
I was originally hoping to get the new iRay Micro and Pulsar clip-ons in time, but that is not looking likely. I might be able to get my hands onto a Pulsar riflescope though. As I said, I'll keep you posted.
Combination of focal length and pixel pitch defines the distance at which I can identify an animal well enough to be able to aim accurately. Johnson identification criterion is a reasonable metric for figuring out maximum distance I can shoot.
Assuming that I am looking at a five foot long hog and I need about 14 pixels to positively tell it apart from a similarly sized deer or cow, Burris and Steiner are easy enough to use out to ~260 yards. Accufire should work well out to about 180 yards (shorter lens).
At the lease I am going to, the feeders are mostly set up between 100 and 150 yards from the blinds, so all the thermals I am taking with me should be good enough. However, there is going to be a lot more distance to look at, so we'll be able to get a really good idea of how these do at a range of distances.
If you are interested, I'll go over how all the distance, focal length, F/# and FOV considerations with thermals work during the next optics-related live show.
The Accufire clip-on is in the process of getting set up by a friend of mine who will be bringing it over from Texas. He is getting it ready to go onto his newly built 6.5 Grendel. If you are looking for a general purpose hunting cartridge out of an AR-15 platform, the Grendel is probably your best bet. That is what I used to take a hog last October at the same Texas lease.
Steiner S35 scope will go onto m suppressed 300Blackout AR-pistol sighted in for 135gr Hornady supersonics.
Burris XTC-50 in front of March 1-8x24 Shorty will be on the Q Mini-Fix 300 Blackout bolt action pistol shooting subsonic ammo with Selous expander projectiles from Discreet Ballistics.
Steiner C35 clip-on in front of Steiner P4Xi 1-4x24 is going onto a 458SOCOM AR-15 shooting 300gr softpoints at about 1900 fps or thereabouts. That should provide for a reasonable durability test.
If Pulsar or iRay miraculously make it here in time, it will go either onto a 6.5Grendel or 6ARC AR-15.
Stay tuned.
