Following up on field shooting supports
In yesterday's livecast, while talking about the challenges of shooting in the field, there were a couple of things I mentioned and I figured I should follow up with the specifics.
For sitting and glassing and for going prone over rocks and such, I found the Eberlestock Butterfly Shooting Pillow bag I have to be extremely helpful:

I do not think they ever intended it for people to sit on, but it was pretty comfortable in that capacity and I spent a LOT of time glassing. It also ended up being my shooting support when shooting off of a dead tree or a rock. When shooting sitting or kneeling off of a tripod, it was wedged between my strong side elbow and knee. It was overall a very useful thing.
It weighs about 1.4lbs and has a few straps to attach to stuff. I am sure other light weigh shooting bags would work as well or maybe better, but this is the one I happened to ahve and I am happy with it. I will talk to my PRS/NRL shooting friends and get a better idea of what kinds of bags they use.
If I were to do it over again, I would have a low tripod with me as well as a steady shooting support. My big tripod is from Field Optics Research and I generally like their stuff, although I am sure you can find something comparable from other makers if you happen to prefer them.
Before my next New Mexico hunt happens, I will probably get these:
BT Precision Ground tripod: https://www.fieldopticsresearch.com/shop/Tripods-for-Hunting/p/BT-Precision-Ground-Tripod-x32890543.htm
12" leg extensions for the tripod that I think I will need for sitting position: https://www.fieldopticsresearch.com/shop/Tripods-for-Hunting/p/12-Carbon-Fiber-32mm-Leg-Extension-3-Pack-x36566286.htm
High Angle bracket for shooting more than 20 deg down or up (this one I already have and use with my big tripod): https://www.fieldopticsresearch.com/shop/Tripods-for-Hunting/p/High-Angle-Bracket---HAB-270-x49747654.htm
Short Bowl Tensioner: https://www.fieldopticsresearch.com/shop/Tripods-for-Hunting/p/Precision-Bowl-Tensioner---Short-Handle-x36253933.htm
The components above are fairly universal. However, how you clamp onto the rifle can vary. Most of my rifles (except for the muzzeloader and a couple of older designs) have either picatinny or Arca Swiss rail sections, so I can clamp them directly to this:
https://www.fieldopticsresearch.com/shop/Tripods-for-Hunting/p/ASFPL-Arca-Swiss-F-Picatinny-Lever-Clamp-with-Pan-Axis---NEW-x51632630.htm
That is what I have on my large tripod. It weighs 4.6 ounces, so not too bad.
However, for more traditional stocks, I use a FlexLite Gunpod that weighs 12ounces, but is truly universal: https://www.fieldopticsresearch.com/shop/Weapon-Support-Tripod-Mounts/p/FlexLite-GunPOD-FM-300F-x52099105.htm
It is machined to fit into Arca-Swiss clamps, but it also has a 3/8-16 threaded hole on the bottom, so it can be attached directly to the bowl tensioner. I'll need to experiment a little and see if there is enough clearance there, but it should work.
Lastly, if you think you'd need a touch more height, they also make this riser, that looks useful, but I have not tried it yet. I'll probably order one when I put this together and experiment: https://www.fieldopticsresearch.com/shop/Tripods-for-Hunting/p/Riser-Assembly---45-x-32mm-Tube-Carbon-Fiber-x37426568.htm
Essentially, what I am trying to recreate here is a shorter, lighter and handier version of the large tripod I use: https://www.fieldopticsresearch.com/shop/Tripods-for-Hunting/p/PRO32-MIL-ASFPL-System-x45153725.htm
If you decide to order any of this stuff from Field Optics Research, code "dark20" will get you 20% off.
I will probably put this together before my next hunt.
Lastly, there is a question of whether you can use this setup for glassing as well. I do not think anyone is itching to drag two different tripods into the field, one for shooting and one for observation. It should work OK for glassing while sitting, but I really need to do some experimentation there.
One possibility is to add a telescoping riser on top of the bowl tensioner with a binocular mount: https://www.fieldopticsresearch.com/shop/Tripods-for-Hunting/p/Telescoping-Riser-Assy---9-15-x-26mm-Tube-Carbon-Fiber-x37453590.htm
That should add a fair amount of flexibility and I can see a couple of ways to make all this stuff QD.
